The heart of our Lord while he was on this earth was clearly burdened for the souls of people. After all, the very purpose he came to earth was to “save his people from their sins”.

ESV Matthew 9:36-38;   When he saw the crowds, he had compassion for them, because they were harassed and helpless, like sheep without a shepherd. Then he said to his disciples, “The harvest is plentiful, but the laborers are few; therefore pray earnestly to the Lord of the harvest to send out laborers into his harvest.”

When he was preparing to ascend back into heaven, after the completion of his work of redemption, he had in mind the great task of proclaiming the gospel to the world. Before leaving to return to the Father he announced to his apostles this “Great Commission”. They were to do this work of preaching the gospel to the entire world. This most certainly was not a commission for the Apostles alone however, but was passed on down to the Church of Jesus Christ to fulfill until his return.

ESV Matthew 28:18-20;   “And Jesus came and said to them, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age.”

FBC sees our responsibilty to be obedient to our part in this great commission of taking the gospel to this world. We acknowledge our direct responsibility to proclaim Christ in Sidney, NY and its surrounding area and also indirectly through missions to the rest of the world.

ESV Acts 1:8;    “But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you, and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth.”
